Our trip to Maui (2016)–Day 12

We’re up at the usual time and out the door at 8:45, heading toward the Ali`i Kula Lavender Farm. We had reserved a cart tour on our trip two years ago and it was subsequently rained/fogged out. Today, we arrive a half hour before the tour, so we take our free lavender scones and not-free coffee ($2.50/cup) out to the deck which features nice views of the central valley below.

There are only three of us on this tour; besides me and Patty, there is a lady from Los Angeles. We can see fog rolling down Haleakala and it’s starting to lightly sprinkle (shit, not again!) so the tour guide gives us umbrellas. Two problems with this–first, we are squeezed somewhat tightly onto this gold cart so the rain rolls off of our umbrellas and onto each other! Second, they don’t work very well. We’re ten minutes into what I would consider a somewhat boring tour even if it was sunny when Patty asks to go back. All three of us are in agreement so the tour is canceled.

Our trip to Maui (2016)–Day 11

Up early (again), I get to the 9:00 Coffee Break meeting at the Alano Club. It’s a good one with about 30 in attendance; ten or more of us are from off the island.

We’ve been in the 505 garage since late Monday and it’s been a royal pain in the ass trying to find a parking spot. I drop Patty off for her morning workout, get some sun. We head out on the highway bound for Kihei and Pizza Madness just after 3:30 and southbound traffic is a major cluster bleep. It takes nearly an hour to get from Shaw Street to the Lahaina Bypass! I think heading up to Lahainaluna Road and hitting the bypass from there must be quicker.

Our trip to Maui (2016)–Day 10

The day starts with dropping Patty off at her workout venue, and then relaxing in the room while waiting for her to return. They are redoing the parking lot so everyone needs to park in the 505 garage until Wednesday, but I’m betting it will be Thursday.

Patty returns from her workout and we hit the road at 7:45 a.m. for a 9:30 Maui Gold Pineapple tour. This is up in Hali`imaile, a town we haven’t seen before and known for Bev Gannon’s Hali`imaile General Store, reportedly one of upcountry’s finest restaurants. We arrive at Maui Gold far in advance of the tour start and find a food truck parked on the property called Kama Hele Cafe so we try it out. I get a pulled pork sandwich with salad and fried rice. Excellent grinds!

Our trip to Maui (2016)–Day 9

The sun was the thing today and I got plenty of it. Patty went out on her floatie for about an hour and got a little cooked. She needs to start using sun protection! I mean, I do and I’ve had the benefit of 30 sessions in the tanning bed prior to coming here. But I guess it’s for her to decide if she wants to suffer. (Dangers of tanning booths aside, of course)

Moon about to set over Lanai

Our trip to Maui (2016)–Day 8

Up just before 5:30 and catch a unique (at least, in our Maui experience) moonset directly over Lanai. Nice! We eat, drink coffee and head out at 7:00, bound for the Maui Swap Meet in Kahului. This meet happens every Saturday and is fun to attend. It only takes an hour or so to wander through all the aisles, buying a Malasada, two Samosas (yummy!) and we each purchase a T-shirt. We’re back to Lahaina by 10:00.

Our trip to Maui (2016)–Day 7

After a somewhat restless night of sleep, Patty and I are both up by 5:30. I get coffee made, get my customary peanut butter toast and then bring the Netbook out on the lanai so I can catch up on the journal.

The weather has been nearly perfect, clear to partly cloud every day since our arrival, high temps in the mid-80′s, moderate trade winds blowing each day. Because of the trade winds, the humidity has been low so the actual temperature is cooler than what would normally be indicated. It’s perfect for walking the beach in the morning, perfect for activities, perfect for just lying out in the sun and doing nothing. So far, this has been the best weather we’ve seen here since probably 2008.

Our trip to Maui (2016)–Day 6

It was another early morning, up at 5:30. Breakfast at the center island, coffee on the lanai. This ritual has become solidified and it’s similar to past trips, except Patty now goes to Island Fitness very early, leaving me to walk the beach solo. We get up, I have breakfast, take in the early morning light with coffee on the lanai, drive Patty to her workout, come back to the hotel and walk the beach. It’s more than satisfactory. It’s awesome.

Our trip to Maui (2016)–Day 5

Breakfast was followed by taking Patty up to her morning workout. I took a short walk on the beach and then relaxed in the room before hitting the sun just before 10:00. It’s hot today so I only manage about an hour and a half before getting a little cooked. There was leftover Chicken Parmesan for lunch and more relaxation in the afternoon, watching TV and napping. We grabbed our Slack Key show tickets and headed up to the Java Jazz bar/restaurant in Honokowai. The atmosphere here is a little different but in a nice way. Nobody else appeared to be eating but there were a number of people at the bar, seemingly locals.

Our trip to Maui (2016)–Day 4

The morning begins as I would like to see every morning start–with coffee on the lanai, watching the first light of the new day splashing on the distant Lanai coast. Perfect!

We take a walk on the beach fairly early this morning; I brought my heart monitor on the trip and burned off 490 calories in 57 minutes. This is a much quicker calorie burn than I was used to seeing from just walking, and then I realized I hadn’t taken my heart medications for two days. Need to get back on top of that!

Our trip to Maui (2016)–Day 3

We’re up at 4 a.m. as expected. My body is still stuck on Central Daylight Time, so it thinks it’s 9 a.m.! Patty showers while I update things on the Netbook. We headed off to the Pioneer Inn for our traditional First Morning Breakfast, as we’ve done on our past several Maui trips. Patty got her customary oatmeal, and I had the three-egg omelette with Portuguese Sausage, onions and pepper jack cheese. Very good, as always. There was a caged bird closely nearby who would let out this loud screeching chirp from time to time. It sounded rather like the blast we hear when we check our smoke detector. Annoying as hell, especially when you’re not expecting it. Or trying to enjoy a quiet breakfast after being on planes for ten hours the day before. :) We found out it was his way of telling his “owners” he was hungry–once he got some food, he was fine. There was also a dog wandering through the bar/restaurant, a retriever named Coach. He got fed some treats and then crashed out on the floor nearby the kitchen.
